Your OS' Keyboard Repeat Delay and Rate Settings Are Worth Changing
The default value for these on most operating systems are too slow IMO. It's a pretty big quality life improvement to adjust them.
I was recently setting up a new machine for a work laptop and was reminded at how slow pressing keys felt with the default keyboard settings. It felt like typing in mud. Adjusting these can lead to a much improved typing experience.
Windows, macOS and most Linux environments will have a way to adjust both your keyboard’s repeat delay as well as the repeat rate.
The takeaway is having a short repeat delay and fast repeat rate.
For example on Windows if you hit Win+s
and search for “keyboard” you can
open the keyboard control panel window. I have mine configured like this.
Other operating systems will have comparable settings.
The video below shows the difference in how typing feels.
P.S., another takeaway from this might be to explore your OS’ settings looking for other ways to improve your day to day. As software developers we spend a lot of time using our computers. It should be an enjoyable experience with minimal to no compromises.
